Thin Spaces

Collaborating with two colleagues, this installation explored the meeting place between the built world and the wild via an interactive ‘virtual’ pavilion.  The installation connected the two worlds through the fundamental notion of a roof and the primordial symbol of a snake.

In the built world, roofs are commonly associated with protection and shelter; however, when experienced from above, they become dangerous and uncertain places.  On the other hand, snakes are prehistoric creatures very much of the earth, who slither along the ground and cyclically shed their skin.  These symbols were then brought together through the construction of a shallow cave carpeted in fresh grass and covered by a taut fabric screen.  Impressed to lie on their backs in the grass, the participants were enveloped by the pavilion as images telling the story of a snake were projected from above onto the fabric screen, while the sound and vibrations from a series of subwoofers located beneath the grass punctuated the film playing out on the now tenuous barrier above them.

The installation ultimately served to heighten and engage all ones faculties as each individual experienced their own changing relationship with, and perception of, the pavilion itself.
