This project saw the re-development of the piazza, Piazza dei Cinquecento, fronting Rome’s train station, Stazione Termini, or Roma Termini. The re-development included the design of a new museum to house the Torlonia Collection of ancient Roman artefacts.
Accepting that all roads lead to it, Rome can be variously seen as a place of gateways marking ones passage in and out of the city. Opened in 1862, Roma Termini is then the post-industrial gateway for Rome. Unfortunately, in the intervening years, the piazza grew into an underwhelming mess of disparate urban elements fronting the transportation hub. Intrigued by these present conditions, this project then explored what could happen if the piazza was extended out from Roma Termini to the nearby National Roman Museum and ruins of the Baths of Diocletian, and cleared of all existing infrastructure to effectively create a tabula rasa for the city. This tabula rasa capitalized on the many physical and cultural layers that exist in Rome as it established a new, artificial layer for the Piazza dei Cinquecento, where the infrastructural elements of the city were now held underground, leaving the blank surface free to build up permanent, semi-permanent and impermanent social layers.
The largest permanent element for the piazza was the new Torlonia Museum, placed just off centre and puncturing the tabula rasa. Entering the city, the museum functioned as a pure object, while when approaching the museum from ‘Rome,’ one saw the penetration and complexity of the design. The museum itself played off the notion of layers and perceptions as, entering below ground, one is pulled up through the building, continually revisiting the sculpture and city through specific punched windows and framed views.
